In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup water, 1 cup sugar, and 6 chopped dried black figs. Simmer for 10–15 minutes until thickened slightly. Strain and cool.
In a mixing glass, add bourbon, black fig syrup, and bitters. Add ice and stir for 20–30 seconds until well-chilled and diluted to taste.
Strain the mixture into a rocks glass over a large ice cube or block to slow dilution and maintain integrity of flavor.
Express an orange peel over the glass to release its oils, run it around the rim, and drop it in. Serve immediately and enjoy.
