Ingredients

  • 1.5 oz vodka or gin
  • 0.75 oz fresh lemon juice
  • 0.75 oz basil simple syrup (see note)
  • 6–8 fresh blueberries
  • 2 oz soda water
  • Ice cubes
  • Garnish: Skewered blueberries and fresh basil sprig

Instructions

  1. In a shaker, muddle the blueberries with basil simple syrup and lemon juice.
  2. Add vodka or gin and fill the shaker with ice.
  3. Shake vigorously for about 15 seconds until well-chilled.
  4. Double strain into a chilled Collins or coupe glass filled with fresh ice.
  5. Top with soda water and give it a gentle stir.
  6. Garnish with a basil sprig and a skewer of blueberries for a polished finish.

Notes

To make basil simple syrup: combine 1 cup sugar, 1 cup water, and a handful of fresh basil. Simmer until sugar dissolves, steep 15 minutes, then strain.
For a zero-proof version, omit the alcohol and increase soda water to 4 oz—it still delivers a refreshing, herbaceous kick.
